Youn Sun Nah unveils Elles
The South Korean singer joins forces with American pianist Jon Cowherd on a collection of songs made famous by iconic female artists such as Nina Simone, Edith Piaf, Grace Jones and others.
It will be released by Warner Music Arts on January 26, 2024.
Hailed for her covers of diverse artists such as Tom Waits, Jimi Hendrix, Marvin Gaye and Metallica, Elles sees Youn Sun Nah bring her remarkable voice and musical perspective to a series of songs, among those that have nurtured her musical approach, and made famous by iconic female artists such as Björk, Sarah Vaughan, Grace Jones, Edith Piaf, Grace Slick and more.
Recorded earlier this year in New York alongside pianist Jon Cowherd (Brian Blade Fellowship, Cassandra Wilson, Lizz Wright) and producer/musician Tomek Miernowski, Elles explores a wide range of songs written or performed by notorious female artists, from the spiritual Sometimes I Feel Like A Motherless Child to the psychedelic rock of White Rabbit, as well as the classics My Funny Valentine and Killing Me Softly With His Song (performed alone with a music box). Supported by Cowherd's subtle and inventive work on various acoustic and electric pianos, Youn Sun Nah reimagines standards, crossing genres and generations with pleasure, magic and intimacy.
“I realized that most of the songs I've recorded over the years have come from male singers,” says Youn Sun Nah. “This time, I wanted to honor the female singers I've admired for a long time, the songs that touch me and the voices that move me.”
Youn Sun Nah will celebrate Elles with an international tour that kicks off on November 6, 2023 in Helsinki, then makes stops in Sweden, Spain, France, Korea, Germany, England, the USA... until autumn 2024. Benjamin Moussay, Tony Paeleman, Bojan Z, Eric Legnini and Ruslan Sirota will join him for this first series of concerts.
